IT'S that time of year again – Dornoch is gearing up for its popular Highland Games.

And Games president Willie Mackay is calling on locals and visitors alike to put on a bit of tartan, join in the 2018 chieftains' parade and make it the biggest yet.

He said: "I invite everyone to march behind Dornoch Pipe Band, which leaves the town square at 12.15pm and proceeds along Castle Street, turning at the Eagle corner.

"Try and wear something tartan on the day, a scarf, hat or trews, whatever you can find."

Leading the parade next Friday (August 3) will be the 2018 Games chieftain Innes Matheson, who has more than 60 years' association with the event.

He started off as a drummer in the pipe band and then became a gate marshal, welcoming everyone to the field.

A new group – the Royal Dornoch mini-golfers – will be leading members of the public who join the parade. The youngsters, aged between four and nine, are being coached by PGA Professional Jorden Ferrie.

They will enjoy some golfing activities in a corner of the Games field and other children can join in as well.

Mr Mackay said: "This year the Games welcomes former pupils of Dornoch Academy who started their first year at the school when the new academy building was opened by the Queen Mother in 1963."

The 2018 event will have all the traditional, much-loved competitions from Highland dancing to piping, cycling and heavy events as well as track and field races.

This year for the first time craft stalls will be housed inside the marquee.

The evening Games dance starts at 9.30pm with Durness based Blue Ridge Band taking the stage.

Profits from the dance will be split between High Life Highland and local group All Sorts, which provides out of school activities for Dornoch pupils.

The Games is a not to be missed spectacle full of life and colour – be there!
