'We couldn't have hoped for better' – Record crowd sets new precedent at Sutherland Show

The president of the Sutherland County Agricultural Show has heaped praise upon event organisers after the event's spectacular return following a two-year hiatus.
A bumper crowd of over 6000 spectators descended upon the showgrounds at Dornoch Links to enjoy the hot weather and take in the main ring of entertainment, complemented by the many cattle, sheep, horses and ponies on exhibit.
Show president Ewan Cameron was elated with what proved to be a record-breaking attendance at this year's show.
He said: "It was great to see such a crowd. We were all on tenterhooks after a couple of years off, wondering what the reception would be and hoping that everybody would be looking forward to a good day out – and they certainly were.
"The attendance sets a new record for us. None of our committee in all the years they have been involved have seen such a large crowd.
"The weather was perfect too, absolutely ideal for people and not too hot for the stock too. We couldn't have hoped for better at all."
Mr Cameron lauded the efforts of the many volunteers who helped to make the show possible, in the lead up to and on the day itself.
"I am very grateful to our committee and our band of loyal helpers for their tireless efforts. They have devoted many evenings to making this show work and we can't thank them enough. Thank you also to our many sponsors and donors who have helped to make things work."
Mr Cameron believes the show's commitment to ensuring it stays true to its core values is a major contributing factor in its success.
He added: "We have always tried to strike a balance between being a small friendly, laid back show and being professional and efficient. A lot of our exhibitors often comment about how the show is laid back and people are not being ordered about like they are at other shows, and is much more friendly.
"We have trying to improve the show each year and constantly build on momentum, so it is very encouraging to see such a response after two years. I hope that the improvements we have made have been part of the reason it has been so successful.
"As ever, we would be very grateful to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with show to help, such as coming along to meetings or helping to set up the show next year. They would be very welcome to get in touch with us via our website or Facebook."
The day kicked off with the judging of horse and pony classes, and soon after, spectators were treated to a daring display from Stannage Stunt Team, who wowed the crowd with a series of motorbike jumps and quad bike tricks.
Later in the afternoon, Ardross Pipe Band filled ears with the welcome sound of pipes and drums.
Children’s sports served as a short interlude from the judging with kids of all ages taking part in several races.
The vintage tractor parade also had its moment, with a large selection of vehicles doing the full circuit for the crowd’s enjoyment.
In the marquees, judging continued as eyes (and tastebuds) were cast over the food and craft entries.
Centre-ring festivities were rounded off with terrier racing.
Livestock exhibitors turned out in abundance for judging, with several fantastic sheep and cattle specimens on display aiming in search of a red ribbon.
The overall Cattle Champion – a yearling stot or heifer – exhibited by John Smith (The Rowans, Brora) took the title of Show Champion, up against stiff competition from Hill Farmers and Sheep Champion Inkstack X Factor from Badanloch Estate – a four-shear ram.
Also in contention were Clydesdale Champion Ord Moanna (E and M Johnstone) and Supreme Native Horse Champion, Midcalder Maggie May (Sarah Campbell).
After claiming the Best in Sutherland ribbon for cattle, the J Munro and Son, Invercharron beast won the overall Born and Bred in Sutherland show championship, while the Best Sheep Born and Bred in Sutherland was a North Loch Naver home bred two-shear ram, sired by £7000 Langdale Let’s Be Having You.
