Staff and pupils at the North West Sutherland Schools Group are celebrating a national Goblin car rally win.
A team of P7 pupils from the group – which comprises Kinlochbervie High School and its feeder primaries at Kinlochbervie, Scourie and Durness – triumphed at the Scottish Goblin Car Rally 2023, held at Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, on June 9.
The team were named as overall champions after taking first place in the drag, slalom and sprint races.
Deputy head teacher Katy Lee said “This was an incredible result for the team as to win the drag and slalom meant having the fastest time out of 96 other races!
“We are so proud of Team Kingfishers, not only for their amazing results but also for how well they worked together as a team throughout the day.”
The Goblin car initiative is run by Greenpower Education Trust, a UK based charity which aims to get young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car.
The Greenpower challenge uses the excitement of motorsport to inspire young people to excel in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
The trust provides the framework for the kit cars, known as Goblins, as well as the components for a battery powered engine.
The race cars must be built by pupils, including designing and sourcing the bodywork themselves, selecting materials and understanding the functioning of components.
Teams also get the chance to drive the car and compete against other local schools at a local race day.
