Watchdog to probe police over Marelle Sturrock death

The police are being investigated in relation to the murder of a pregnant teacher originally from Wick, it has emerged.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) has been instructed to launch a probe after the death of Marelle Sturrock, who was allegedly murdered by her partner David Yates.

The woman's body was found on Tuesday, April 25, after a concern for person call to Police Scotland. She was 29 weeks pregnant.

Officers launched a murder inquiry and were hunting for Yates (36). They confirmed a body recovered from Mugdock Reservoir on Thursday was the suspect's.

PIRC confirmed it had been told to investigate.

A spokesperson said: “Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the PIRC to carry out an investigation into the death of Marelle Sturrock on April 25 within 91 Jura Street, Glasgow.

“Once our inquiries are complete a report will be submitted to COPFS.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “As this is being investigated by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) we are unable to comment further.”
