IT'S been too long!

More than two years of anticipation - with a pandemic thrown in for good measure - will come to an end on Sunday night.

Of Course, I speak of the Peaky Blinders, which returns for its sixth and final season on BBC1 on Sunday night at 9pm.

Life has been a little less exciting for many people without Tommy Shelby and his ruthless and very dysfunctional gang on the scene since the conclusion of season five at the end of 2019.

I was an exceptional latecomer to the Peaky Blinders - season one aired in September 2013 - and binge-watched the series during the pandemic and those dark, lonely days when we were all confined indoors, and craving good telly to distract us from dysfunctional reality of our lives.

However, like many people I was instantly hooked on the award-winning drama which follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a post-WWI gang in Birmingham, and how they rule the criminal underworld with an iron fist.

Despite their failings and sinister sides, of which there are many, you can't help falling in love with the Shelby family.

Cillian Murphy in the starring role of Tommy Shelby is fantastic, and Tom Hardy, who plays the evil and violent Jewish gang leader Alfie Solomons, is another of my favourites.

The return of the show will be tinged with sadness as well following the death of actor Helen McCrory, who played the amazing Polly Gray, before filming started. It will be a poignant moment when Polly's death is written into the show.

Part of the filming schedule for the sixth season brought many of the cast to Portsoy in February 2020, at the height of the pandemic, but when restrictions permitted professional film work to resume.

It was certainly exciting in our office as we kept up to date with the latest developments through the lens of our photographer Daniel Forsyth, who almost became a Peaky extra for the week at the historic harbour in the coastal village.

Lots of local folk secured places as extras during the week and there will be great excitement as they settle down to watch the first episode on Sunday night.
