An enormous stone destined to become a memorial to the Battle of Littleferry, has been extracted and moved from the Golspie croft on which it stood.

The six ton, 5ft tall stone was lifted by crane onto a transporter and taken to Sutherland Stonework in the village where it will be engraved by business owner Bruce Shelley.

It will eventually be erected along the Littleferry Road on one of the fields where fighting took place. A small memorial garden is also to be created. Up to 100 men were killed in the skirmish.

Up to the task of moving the huge stone were, from left, Chris Somerville, Bruce Shelley, Magnus Sinclair and Murdo Sutherland.

A spokesman for the memorial project said: "Plans are well on schedule to mark the Jacobean battle with a special ceremony on April 15 next year - the 276th anniversary of the battle."

A battlefield trail is also being set up and a book outlining the history of the event and including a trail guide, will be published early next year.

Members of the project team will give an update on progress at a public meeting hosted by Goslpie Heritage Society on Thursday, December 2. Other organisations involved in the project will also be in attendance.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the event at the Fountain Road Hall from 7.30pm.
