WATCH: Community driven Merkinch primary crowned school of the year at Highland Heroes Awards
An Inverness school has been named as school of the year at this year's Highland Heroes Awards.
Merkinch Primary School scooped the accolade at the annual ceremony.
The school works hard to deliver not just for its pupils, but for the whole Merkinch and South Kessock community. Fundraising means no child is deprived of the opportunities of school trips because of cost, there are winter jackets for all, and no-cost after school activities run by volunteers and school staff.
There is a breakfast café, and at Christmas, a gift for every child to take home. Headteacher Jillian Kean is immensely proud of her team of and the part the children and their families play in the school’s success.
She said: "Merkinch is a really unique school. We are just a school who are here for our community, so all the things we do everyday is for Merkinch.
"We are a team around the child and around the family and that's what it is for us. We want them to get the best experiences they can do."
The school of the year category was sponsored by Ross-shire Engineering.
