Cairngorm Mountain has said that it will open its lower beginners' slope this weekend.

The ski resort had not been due to start its snowsports operation until December 21 but has brought the start of the season forward to this Saturday following the arrival of good amounts of snow since the start of the month.

Colin Matthew, the resort's head of technical operations, said that the two new magic carpets will be in operation for snowsports for the first time.

He said: "Unfortunately until we get other things going we are limiting our ticket sales to around 150 which will be released soon but the team are hard at work further up the mountain.

"There are more snow guns going up the mountain and the guys are out de-icing, putting the ropes back on and the bars on the car park tow."

Mr Matthew said the forecast continues to look good although a slight warmer spell is on the way but that will help to consolidate the snow pack.

Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd posted: "We're delighted to announce we’re opening earlier than planned from this Saturday with our improved beginner’s slope.

"We’ll announce soon when our day tickets are on sale and when further uplifts can be opened."
