Volunteer referee Max (15) from Brora doubles up with national youth award
An aspiring teenage football referee from Brora has been presented with a national youth volunteer award after “doubling” his efforts.
15-year-old Max Ainsworth, who attends Golspie High School, had already been presented with a 100-hour Saltire Ascent certificate last December, in recognition of his work as a football referee, volunteering for children's groups, Brora Mini Kickers and Senior Kickers.

The S4 pupil, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was eight months old, drew praise from his favourite Brora Rangers player, Paul Brindle, who highlighted his “incredible achievements” as a whistle blower for the kids’ groups after receiving his last certificate.
Just four months on, Max’s contribution to the community has been further recognised with the presentation of a 200-hour Saltire Ascent award, after he completed a further 100 hours of volunteer work.
In front of a group of players involved in the clubs, the young official received his certificate from his coach David 'Titch' Roberts at a training session for Brora Mini Kickers last Thursday.
Mum Justine Clark said: “We are extremely proud of Max and his commitment to his refereeing. He is out through all sorts of weather and we love the support he receives from all the Mini and Teenage Kickers.”
Saltire Awards, presented on behalf of Voluntary Groups Scotland, are awarded to young people between the ages of 12 and 25 who are volunteering for the benefit of the community or a good cause.
Each award is signed by Scottish Government ministers before it is issued.
