Members of the Golspie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland marked VJ (Victory in Japan) Day last Saturday.
A small parade took place at the village’s War Memorial after which branch secretary Kenny McAulay gave a short address.
He told those assembled: “As we live through a global pandemic, we endure minor inconveniences to life in comparison to those who fought in World War II. We remember their sacrifice so that we might be free.
“Seventy-five years ago today Imperial Japan surrendered, in effect bringing World War II to an end. News of the surrender sparked celebrations the world over but we don’t forget the human cost.
“We remember all those who fought and didn’t come home. We remember those who endured such horrendous conditions as prisoners-of-war.
“As King George VI said at the time: ‘Let us salute in proud gratitude the great host of the living who have brought us to victory.’”
There followed a two minute silence and the laying of wreaths by Sutherland Depute Lieutenant Major General Patrick Marriott on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant; and Peter Polson MBE on behalf of the Golspie branch.
Maj Gen Marriott went on to propose a toast to and paid tribute to those who made it through some of the most difficult times in our military history.
Standard bearers at the event were Legion branch member David Hignett and Richard Turney, representing the Sutherland branch of the Royal Naval Association.
Also on parade were Legion branch chairman Donald Rowe, honorary president Bill Cowie, Carl Lemkes, Henry Cooper, John Melville, Bob Inkster, Jim Macleod, Iain MacGruer as well as Mr McAulay and his wife Laura.
Mr McAulay said later: “When able, we will mark all the celebrations missed due to the coronavirus pandemic.”
