Veterans gather at Golspie War Memorial to say a sad farewell to Commander in Chief Queen Elizabeth II – the 'Boss'

A ceremony commemorating the life and service of Queen Elizabeth II was held at Golspie War Memorial on Saturday.

The Golspie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) joined with the Sutherland branch of the Royal Naval Association (RNA) to host the event, to which veterans and their families were invited.

RBLS Golspie branch secretary Kenny McAulay said: “Veterans and their families gathered to say farewell to our Commander in Chief, the “Boss”.

Wreaths were laid by Donald Rowe, chairman of RBLS Golspie branch, and Captain Paul Lemkes, president of the RNA Sutherland Branch. A beautiful floral wreath was laid by Ross Whitehead on behalf of the village.

Standard bearers David Hignett, RBLS, and Iain MacGruer, RNA, lowered their standards as Pipe Major Erin Monaghan played a beautiful lament.

A special message was read out on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant of Sutherland Major General Patrick Marriott and veterans' tributes were read by Captain Lemkes and Mr McAulay.
