A BRITISH Army veteran, who is running round the UK coastline in aid of a mental health charity, is due to reach East Sutherland on Friday.

Paul Minter, from Leamington Spa, is not being supported in his challenge and is in need of food and shelter along the way.

"I am largely relying on the goodwill of the general public for accommodation and respite during my journey," he said.

He is also inviting local residents help buoy his spirits by running any section or distance with him.

Paul Minter is running the equivalent of 192 marathons around the UK coastline in 218 days.

Mr Minter set off on his 5,000 mile marathon on March 1 from Liverpool and hopes to finish there on October 4.

He is running, in a clockwise direction, the equivalent of 192 marathons around the UK coastline in 218 days, and hopes to set a new world record.

The aim of the challenge is to raise funding for Head Up, a new mental health charity co-founded by Paul, who served 18 years in the British Army as a reconnaissance soldier, completing five tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The charity has one major goal - to create a £3 million residential retreat in the British countryside where soldiers past and present can go for respite.

The novice ultra-marathon runner reached Scotland on March 13 and Glasgow today - Tuesday, March 29.

He is set to travel directly from Glasgow to John O'Groats tomorrow - Wednesday, March 30 - having been advised to omit the west Highlands' coastline from his challenge due to the "unsuitability of the terrain for long-distance running".

Paul will run from John O'Groats to Wick on Thursday, March 31, and from Wick to Helmsdale on Friday, April 1.

On Saturday, April 2, he is scheduled to run from Helmsdale to Embo, and on Sunday, April 3, from Embo to Portmahomack.
