UPDATE: Search continues off Kinlochbervie for missing diver

A major air, land and sea search is continuing off the Sutherland coast for a missing diver.

The alarm was raised just before 11am when the diver became overdue off Kinlochbervie.

The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway, Lochinver lifeboat, a coastguard tug and coastguard teams have all been scouring the area.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime Coastguard Agency said that nearby vessels have also been contacted by radio to keep a look out.

She said: "At approximately 11am today (1 July), HM Coastguard received a report from a dive vessel that one of their party of divers having failed to resurface near Kinlochbervie.

"Kinlochbervie and Melness coastguard rescue teams have been sent, alongside the Lochinver RNLI lifeboat and the search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway.

"A mayday call has been put out to any nearby vessels to request their assistance in a search, with the search ongoing. The Coastguard ETV (Emergency Tow Vessel) Ievoli Black has also joined the search effort further offshore."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said :“Officers are currently involved in an ongoing multi-agency search in the area.”

Only a few days ago a diver died after exploring a wreck in Orkney.

Police Scotland said he was 57-year-old David Pleace from Derby.
