A Sutherland man whose heavy drinking cost him his relationship with a neighbour bombarded her with text and social media messages in an effort to win her back.

But Karl Jappy's attempts were rejected by the woman and eventually the police arrested him.

At Inverness Sheriff Court today Jappy (33), of Crossroads, Portskerra, was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid community work.

An 18-month non-harassment order was also imposed to protect the woman.

Sheriff Sara Matheson told Jappy: “These were very alarming matters and you didn't get the message when she wanted nothing more to do with you."

At an earlier hearing Jappy admitted stalking the woman between October 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019. He also pleaded guilty to a course of domestic abuse against the woman between April, 2019 and January, 2020.

The court heard that the relationship was briefly rekindled, but Jappy continued drinking and it was again ended.

However he resumed messaging his ex and on occasion, entered her house uninvited.

Fiscal depute David Morton told the earlier hearing: "Towards the end of 2018, he began to make offensive remarks towards her, and on occasion tell her what she was and was not allowed

"He was also overheard dictating to her who she could speak to, who she could be friends with and what she should spend her money on."

The court was told she ended it but then the messages began, with Jappy sending in the region of 20 over two days.

On another occasion in the early hours in January, 2019, Jappy appeared drunk in her bedroom.

Mr Morton said the relationship resumed for a short while thereafter, but during the 2019 festive period, his heavy drinking resumed and it was ended again.

The court heard that Jappy pleaded with the woman not to end their liaison and sent non-abusive messages to her wanting to speak or meet with her.

But on January 17, 2020, Jappy twice entered her house again to be found by the woman's mother and she phoned the police.
