We could all do with a hug given the current situation. But, of course, that is not possible because of social distancing.

However managers of support group The Young Karers East Sutherland (TYKES) came up with a novel way of giving a metaphorical hug to their young folk and marking Young Carers Day at the same time.

After sourcing Covoid-19 funding, they sent all 103 of their young carers a cushion on which were the words ‘sending you a hug’ along with TYKES and the group’s rainbow coloured logo.

The cushions were delivered by TYKES’ staff to homes across Sutherland last Thursday – the day designated as Young Carers Day.

Manager Myra Clark said: “Staff knocked on doors and stepped back and when it was opened, they threw the cushions over. The kids didn’t know anything about it and were so thrilled.

“It was brilliant and the feedback we have received has been amazing.”

She added: “It was really all about letting them know that we are still here and to give us a shout if they need us."
