Golspie looks ‘likely’ to have a bonfire and party to mark the turn of the year, community council chairman Ian Sutherland has said.

He was asked at the group’s meeting earlier this month whether any plans were being made for a community event.

Mr Sutherland said Golspie Rowing Club was considering holding a torchlight procession and bonfire on January 1. The club is also discussing putting on a torchlight row and barbecue in the late afternoon of December 31.

“There is to be a meeting in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the event will go ahead and hopefully we will be having a party in Fountain Road Hall afterwards,” said Mr Sutherland.

“We will advertise it as soon as a decision is made.”

Mr Sutherland added: "Organisers request that people do not deposit any materials (for the bonfire) in the Rhives mountain bike car park as the site has in the past been abused by people dumping material other than firewood."

In the years before the coronavirus pandemic struck, Golspie held a torchlight parade through the main street on New Year's Day to the bonfire site at Rhives.

Last year a midnight fireworks display was held next to the statue at the top of Ben Bhraggie.
