The 18-year-old girl who died after a fall from cliffs at Thurso is named as Alesha Wright and tributes have flooded social media for the "beautiful young lady", described by her mother as a "shy sweet girl".
Emergency services were called out to the incident at Victoria Walk on Monday after two people had been reported to have fallen from a cliff.
An HM Coastguard helicopter was involved in the police-led rescue operation which ended with the death of Ms Wright and an unnamed 26-year-old man being rushed to hospital.
The Thurso lifeboat was launched to provide sea cover while Coastguard rescue teams from Wick, Scrabster and Duncansby were all called out.
Ms Wright's death is being treated as "unexplained" by police and enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.
On the John O'Groat Journal's Facebook page, a woman called Deb Jo said she is the mother of the deceased and paid tribute to all who had left condolences.

Ms Jo said her daughter had lived with her near Thurso but mostly stayed with her boyfriend.
"I just want to know how it happened," she told the Groat.
Ms Jo replied to several of the Facebook messages of condolence to thank the persons sending them.
One such was from Maryanne Beeching who wrote: "This is horrendous news, devastating for family, friends and everyone involved. 18 years old, her life was just beginning. Absolute tragedy. RIP girl!"
Maureen O'Sullivan wrote: "What a beautiful young lady, Big hugs to you" while Joanna Nellina Mackinnon said: "Deb Jo I am so so sorry for your loss my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family xxx". Many other tributes were sent from friends of the deceased with sentiments such as "Fly high gorgeous girl" and saying she was "such a beautiful soul inside and out".
Ms Wright's Facebook profile says she was originally from Newcastle upon Tyne and had studied at North Highland College UHI.
