Sutherland veterans are organising a touching tribute to the Countess of Sutherland, whose funeral takes place in Dornoch Cathedral today (Saturday).

Following the service, the funeral cortege will makes its way to Dunrobin Castle where it is understood the countess will be buried in the family cemetery.

The Golspie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland is calling on veterans in the county and their families to line the road when the procession passes through Golspie.

Branch spokesman Kenneth McAulay said: “As a mark of respect to the Countess of Sutherland, all veterans and families are invited to parade at the Memorial Garden on Saturday December 21, from around noon.

“We plan to line the route as the cortège retires to Dunrobin and would be delighted if any interested parties could join us.”

He added: “To those wishing to join us on Saturday we would ask those who have medals and headdress to wear them and be at the gardens from 11.45 to ensure we can be lined up in time for the cortège passing.”

Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland, the 24th Countess of Sutherland, passed away on Monday, December 9, at the London home she shared with her daughter Annabel. She was aged 98.

It was initially thought that her funeral would take place at Dunrobin Castle but it is now to be held by Rev Susan Brown at Dornoch Cathedral from 11am tomorrow.

Her death means her eldest son Alistair, formerly Lord Stranthnaver, is now the Earl of Sutherland and his son Alexander, takes the title of Lord Strathnaver.

Tributes have flooded in from those who worked for or knew the countess.

A post on Dunrobin Castle’s facebook page states: “Many people from around the world have been in touch to pass on their thoughts and condolences to the Sutherland Family at this time.”

The castle grounds will be closed all day tomorrow..
