Local man Max Bannerman has been selected by Highland Conservatives to stand in the East Sutherland and Edderton ward at the Highland Council elections on Thursday, May 5.

Mr Bannerman was educated at Dornoch Academy and has strong local links to Sutherland. He is currently an adviser to Highlands and Islands regional MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston.

He said: “I am delighted to be standing for the Highland Conservatives in the East Sutherland and Edderton ward, where I went to school and was brought up.

“It is clear to me that the Highland Council is simply not working for people in this part of the Far North.

“That is the message that I’m receiving loudly and clearly on the doorsteps.

“Sutherland has a very strong case to make as one of the most neglected and underfunded areas of the Highland region.

“It seems to be consistently overlooked whilst the city of Inverness and surrounding areas have received vast sums of public investment.

“If elected in May, I’ll stand firmly against the continued centralisation of services and fight for decision-making to be brought back to the most local level possible.

“Sutherland has a distinct geography and population and some of the work with the UK and Scottish governments by the island authorities show just what can be achieved in better recognising our more remote and rural areas – and making sure local people can have their say in how their communities are run.”

Edward Mountain MSP, supporting Max Bannerman’s council campaign, said: “Max understands and is driven by the issues that matter most to local communities across the Highlands.

“Max will work tirelessly for the people of East Sutherland and Edderton and by electing him you will ensure your voice is heard.”

Mr Bannerman will be vying to be elected in the three-member ward against present incumbents councillors Richard Gale, of Golspie, and Jim McGillivray, of Embo. Both have said that they intend to stand again.

However their colleague, veteran councillor Deirdre Mackay, Brora, has said she is standing down.
