A “ROCK star” of geology and an archaeologist are backing plans to make the Flow Country in Caithness and Sutherland a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are set to voice their support at a series of talks including one at Lairg on Friday.

Professor Iain Stewart and Neil Oliver will be joined by UNESCO expert Professor Barry Gilbertson at the sessions, which answer the question: “Why make The Flow Country a World Heritage Site?”

The ‘Full Flow’ events at Lairg Community Centre on July 5, in Thurso on July 6 and Inverness on July 7 have been organised by a consortium of leading conservation bodies including The Peatlands Partnership and sponsor Wildland Limited.

They will highlight the cultural and environmental importance of the Flow Country, address Scotland’s climate emergency, the need to protect the beauty and wildlife of the area’s unique habitat and the part it plays in the lives of people who live here.

Historian and archaeologist Neil Oliver and Prof Stewart, a well-known geologist, are familiar faces on TV, having hosted a string of BBC documentaries.

Mr Oliver’s programmes have also helped to put many remote places on the map.

As well as being a UNESCO expert, Prof Gilbertson is also a visiting professor at Northumbria University.

Joe Perry, the project co-ordinator for The Flow Country World Heritage Site Working Group, said: “Bringing together three such passionate advocates of Scotland’s natural and cultural environment will help to bring the bid process to life for many more people, including the younger generation whose support and enthusiasm for thriving communities and natural habitats we believe is absolutely crucial for the future stability of The Flow Country.

The events will be entertaining and informative, setting out why The Flow Country is the best habitat of its type anywhere in the world and so deserving of special status on an international stage.”

The Lairg talk takes place between 7pm and 9pm. It is free, but booking is advised via http://bit.ly/full-flow-lairg
