A veteran Brora crofter has taken the top award in the annual autumn show and sale held at Thainstone Mart, Inverurie, last month.

John Smith, the Rowans, won the show with his red stot, named AI Willie Boy and scored another success when his black Limousin cross heifer, Princess Katie, was awarded reserve champion.

It is the latest success in a triumphant year for Mr Smith who has been crofting for more than 30 years.

He swept the boards in the strongly competitive Crofters' Cattle section at the Sutherland Agricultural Show in July, scooping six trophies including the overall supreme show championship.

His 20-month-old Limousin cross heifer The Bedhopper was overall supreme show champion and Princess Katie and AI Willie Boy also notched up wins. It was an overwhelming success following months of hard work and preparation.

Team Rowans - Mr Smith, his son Kyle and daughter Katie - took home from the agricultural show an array of silverware, namely the M A Forbes Shield. Crakaig Cup, George Macleod Memorial Cup, James Leslie Memorial Cup, Cambusmore Cup and the Fraser Trantlebeg Shield.
