Three long-standing volunteers are in the running for the 2021 Dornoch Community Award.

Willie Fraser, William Hamilton and Marian Swanson made the shortlist drawn up by Dornoch Area Community Council from 10 nominations submitted by groups and individuals.

Michael Banks was the winner of the inaugural award last year for his contribution to the Dornoch community.

Embo resident Mr Fraser has been connected with Dornoch Pipe Band for more than half-a-century. He leads their band practice nights and the band at its Saturday evening parades held in the town during the summer.

The majority of the current band members have been taught by him, along with other pipers now living outwith Dornoch.

William Hamilton of the Embo Trust is instrumental in the smooth running of Embo’s community shop and during the pandemic made sure elderly and vulnerable residents had the essentials they needed.

A former community councillor, he is very involved with the football club and is also a fundraiser for MacMillan Cancer Support and the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Marian Swanson has worked tirelessly for more than 15 years generating funds for good causes through the Finnbarr’s Charity Shop. Pre-Covid she ran a weekly coffee morning in Dornoch Social Club and also collected donations for Highland Foodbank.

Community council chairman Patrick Murray said: “We have been overwhelmed by both the quantity and quality of nominations received from local groups and individuals, which demonstrates the vital role volunteers play in our community.”

A public vote is currently running via a ballot in local shops and community buildings and an online poll. The winner will be announced at the community council’s June AGM.
