The highest place was achieved by Mallaig High School which came in at 57, followed by Millburn Academy in Inverness at 70 and Fortrose Academy snuck in at 95.

All the schools are run by Highland Council and the news is likely to be welcomed by the local authority, which was under pressure after it ranked worst in Scotland in P1, P4 and P7 for literacy and numeracy.

Mallaig High School

Mallaig, which provides Gaelic Medium Education, came in at 57 with 55 per cent pupils gaining five Highers or more as well as 17 per cent getting two or more Advanced Highers.

A further 28 per cent of pupils got eight or National 5 and 76 per cent got five or more.

Millburn Academy

While 47 per cent of Millburn pupils got five or more Highers and 68 per cent got three or more and that was accompanied by 19 per cent getting two or more Advanced Highers and 34 per cent getting at least one.

At National 5 40 per cent or got eight or more and 79 per cent got five or more.

Fortrose Academy

Finally Fortrose Academy on the Black Isle saw 46 per cent of its pupils get five or more Highers and 64 per cent get three or more.

Like Mallaig, 17 per cent of pupils achieved two or more Advanced Highers and 28 per cent got one or more.
