Almost 1000 homes and businesses in north-west Sutherland were without electricity this morning after a power cut in the early hours.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said the outage - which will likely be affecting thousands of people - took place at 4.11am and that engineers were on site.

The area affected extends from Kylesku in the south, up north through Scourie, Rhiconich and Kinlochbervie and all the way to Durness. It extends east from there past Loch Eriboll and Loch Hope and across the A' Mhòine peninsula before heading south and affecting areas around Loch Shin and Rosehall.

A spokesperson initially said they hoped to restore power by 8am but this later slipped back to at least midday. This time could also still be subject to change depending on how well repairs progress..

"We're aware of a power cut in the area shown affecting 952 homes. This unplanned fault is affecting a large area, and it's likely several streets in your area are affected by the same power cut.

"We have engineers on the way and they are due to arrive in you local area at 6am. Once they arrive, they will get straight to work on investigating the fault and attempt to restore your power.

"The cause of this power cut is a fault on the overhead network. This is the most common type of fault we see, and our teams are very experienced in dealing with these issues.

"In most cases, our engineers are able to get your power back on by simply replacing a fuse at the local substation, however, if the fault is severe, this may take us longer to fix. If this does happen, we will let you know.
