Seven to fight for vacant Tain and Easter Ross Highland Council seat

SEVEN candidates have thrown their hats in the ring for an Easter Ross seat on Highland Council.

Following today’s deadline for nominations, Highland Council has confirmed the details of all the candidates standing in the Tain and Easter Ross ward 7 by-election.

It became vacant when Cllr Sarah Rawlings (Scottish Liberal Democrat) stood down

The candidates are:

ALLISON, Gordon – Scottish National Party of An Claddach, Ardmore, Edderton

BARNETT, Andrew - Scottish Green Party (address in the Highland Council area)

CHRISTIAN, Harry - Scottish Libertarian Party of Tower Street, Golspie.

MORRISON, Veronica - Scottish Conservative and Unionist (address in the Highland Council area)

PERERA, Michael - Scottish Labour Party (address in the Highland Council area)

ROSS, Maureen - Independent (address in the Highland Council area)

STEPHEN, Charles - Scottish Liberal Democrats (address in the Highland Council area)

Voting will take place on Thursday, September 28 with the electronic count taking place the following day in the ward.

Tain and Easter Ross is a three-member ward.

The successful candidate will join fellow ward members, Councillors Derek Louden (Scottish National Party) and Alasdair Rhind (Highland Independent).

Anyone over 16 years old who is living in the ward is eligible to take part in this by-election if they are registered to vote.

To register to vote, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-voteor alternatively call the Electoral Registration Officer on 0800 393 783 for assistance.

The last date to register to vote in this by-election is midnight on Tuesday, September 12.

Voters will be able to cast their vote in person on the day by visiting their polling station or they can apply for either a postal vote or appoint a proxy, which is requesting someone to vote on their behalf.

Highland Council said poll cards will be posted out and these should be checked carefully as details of where voters should go to cast their vote in person will be provided.

To avoid any disruption to pupils, Hill of Fearn Primary school will be used as a polling station. Voters who usually vote in Fearn should go to the Seaboard Memorial Hall in Balintore to vote in person or alternatively apply for a postal vote.

The latest time to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, September 13.The deadline for anyone wishing to appoint a proxy is 5pm on Wednesday, September 20.
