The Scottish SPCA Caithness and Sutherland rescue centre has received a generous donation of £500 from the Tesco store in Thurso.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was overwhelmed by the support shown from the local business which donated through the Tesco Bags of Help COVID-19 Communities Fund.

The donation comes after the Society recently launched their #DontForgetTheAnimals campaign revealing almost 1500 members have stopped their monthly donations due to the coronavirus pandemic. This, combined with the cancellation of fundraising events and challenges, means the Society could face losing up to 20 per cent of its income this year in a worst-case scenario.

Manager of the Rescue and Rehoming Centre near Dounreay, Christine Urquhart, said: “We are so grateful to Tesco in Thurso who chose to support us from the Tesco Bags of Help COVID-19 Communities Fund.

“We are going to use some of the money to buy food and calming treats for dogs in our care.

“Dogs can sometimes struggle to adapt to life in kennels but things like long lasting treats, interactive toys and calming collars and diffusers can really help relieve some of their anxiety.

“Dogs like Sam, a four-year-old Labrador cross, will really benefit from these items to keep them calm and mentally stimulated.

“We’re also going to expand the living accommodation for rabbit brothers Jack and Victor.

“They have been with us for over a year, despite repeated appeals, and have now outgrown their enclosure. The upgrade will give them more space to exercise properly.

“We will be buying food, bedding and an outside run with play tunnels, as well as treats for them too.

“We don’t receive any funding from the government so we rely entirely on kind donations such as this.

“It costs £11,000 per day to run the centre so donations like this are invaluable to allow us to continue our work rescuing, rehabilitating, rehoming and releasing the animals of Scotland.”
