Members of Tain and District Civic Trust were given a tour of Brora Heritage Centre on Saturday, March 26, by Dr Nick Lindsay, chairman of Clyne Heritage Society.

Dr Lindsay spoke about how Brora, with its harbour and coal mine, had served as the industrial centre of Sutherland for nearly half a century.

Other industries including salt production, brick making and a textile mill evolved, although none now survive.

However, the village's harbour still has a small fleet of fishing boats and Clynelish distillery remains in operation.

After the tour, Dr Lindsay took the visitors to the Clynekirkton Church and burial ground where it is estimated thousands of bodies were buried, and told some fascinating stories that lurked behind many of the graves.

Trust chairman Richard Littlewood said: “It was an illuminating morning and members learned so much about local history. Dr Lindsay was an inspirational host.”
