A Sutherland student has won a top award at the North Highland College’s Gamekeeping Prizegiving ceremony held in Thurso.

Awards are presented to students who have excelled at college and on placement.

One student from each category was awarded the title of 2011/12 Student of the Year and Malcolm McEwan (18) from Caberfeidh, 269 West Strathan, Talmine, won the Modern Apprentice category.

John Weir (32) from Newtonmore won the National Certificate category and Shamus Nairn (21) from Ullapool, the Higher National Certificate category.

NHC runs three courses in gamekeeping and wildlife management – Modern Apprenticeship (MA) in Gamekeeping SVQ Level 2; National Certificate (NC) Highland Gamekeeping; and Higher National Certificate (HNC) Gamekeeping with Wildlife Management.

All of these courses operate by giving the trainees/students a placement on a sporting estate and they attend NHC Thurso for short blocks of study.

The sponsors of the event were Scottish Gamekeepers Association, Swarovski and British Association Shooting Conservation.
