Ahead of the Jubilee weekend, environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful has announced that five beaches in the Highlands have become a prestigious Scotland’s Beach Award winner.

This year Brora, Sango Sands in Durness, Dornoch Beach and Nairn Central have all been recognised with Scotland’s Beach Award - the only national benchmark for local environmental quality celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches.

Loch Morlich, Scotland’s only fresh-water award beach, has retained its status as one of 53 winning beaches in 11 different local authority areas.

Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said, “It is wonderful to see 53 sites win Scotland’s Beach Award status this year, with five in the Highlands and we are delighted to celebrate with all those employees and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure award standards are maintained.

“As the only accreditation for beach management of its kind in Scotland, we aim to drive up environmental standards along the coastline of our country for residents and visitors alike.

“Scotland’s coastlines and waters attract thousands of visitors every year and I’d encourage everyone to #RespectProtectEnjoy these beaches this summer.”

Tony Gill, chair of the Brora Development Trust said: “Brora Development Trust are delighted to secure the Keep Scotland Beautiful Beach Award for Brora for 2022.

"The beach award is recognition for the efforts made by the local community in keeping the beach clean and ensuring that facilities are well maintained.

"The scheme is an excellent incentive for local communities to take pride in the coastline of Scotland.

Patrick Murray, Dornoch Area Community Council (DACC) chair, said, “We are delighted to learn that Dornoch is one of only five beaches in the Highlands to attain the prestigious Keep Scotland Beautiful Beach Award.

"This award recognises both the natural beauty of Dornoch Beach and the immense amount of work undertaken by volunteers from the Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs and East Sutherland Rescue Association, the Dornoch Caravan Park operators and the employees of Highland Council who all work diligently throughout the year to keep the area clean and tidy.

"Finally, the award is also a tribute to the many local residents who are proud of their beach and invest some of their own time keeping it clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.”
