A 'sweet' donation from a Tain couple has benefited a Sutherland based charity supporting the ex-services community.

When Gordon and Jane Kenny moved to the Highlands not so long ago, they brought with them an unusual skill – chocolate making.

Their confectionery offering, branded as ‘Highland Thistle Chocolates’, found a ready outlet in Janice Bannister’s ‘Barn Owl Bothy’ shop on Dornoch’s High Street - and sales boomed.

Now the couple are donating the profits from their sales – a healthy three figure sum – to the Sutherland branch of armed forces charity SSAFA.

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) is a UK-wide organisation which helps serving and retired armed forces personnel and their families in time of need.

Recent turbulence caused by COVID-19, and other economic factors, have ensured that SSAFA’s work is as necessary as ever.

SSAFA Sutherland chairman William Sutherland said, "SSAFA Sutherland’s small team is so very grateful for this generous donation from Gordon and Jane, and also to Janice for having sold the chocolates in her shop. Each SSAFA branch is responsible for raising its own funds, and it is local donations like these which help us continue our work in Sutherland’s ex-services community. These funds will be put to very good use to offer assistance and support to Sutherland armed forces veterans and their families who need our help."
