Christmas is just around the corner with a mere six weeks left to go before all things tinsel.

And Rotakids’ members in three East Sutherland primary schools have been busy filling a bumper number of shoeboxes with necessities and treats to brighten up the festive season for children in refugee camps in Eastern European countries.

Youngsters at Brora, Helmsdale and Dornoch have stuffed around 200 shoeboxes with toys, toiletries and treats.

On Saturday Rotarians Claudia Macgregor and Will Sutherland, packed the boxes into a car and trailer to be taken to Aberdeen where a lorryload of some 10,000 boxes from across the north was due to set off to Dover and on across the continent.

Dornoch Primary school teacher Alison Allan said pupils had enjoyed taking part in the initiative.

“They absolutely loved feeling that they would be making a difference,” she said.
