The presentations were made by Sutherland Lord-Lieutenant Major General Patrick Marriott as well as the fire service’s Local Senior Officer (LSO) Michael Humphreys and Interim Chief Officer (ICO) Ross Haggart.

The long service medal is awarded for 20 years of good and efficient full-time or part-time service. Some officers present received 30 and 40 years clasps.

Major General Marriott revealed he had briefly been a firefighter with the army in Manchester in 1978/79.

He spoke about the three “extraordinary qualities" possessed by firefighters – courage, professional skills and selflessness.

“Firefighters are very special people,” he said.
