A unique tribute is to be paid to a number of volunteers in Sutherland in recognition of the many hours of unpaid work they carry out.

Over the next two years eight volunteers in the county will be presented with specially commissioned coasters.

Sutherland’s Lord Lietuenant Patrick Marriott came up with the idea in order to show his appreciation of the work done by volunteers.

He personally commissioned Highland Stoneware of Lochinver to produce the coasters, each of which is unique.

All are numbered and inscribed on the reverse.

Lochinver pottery artist Tracey Aird created the design and artwork for the coasters.

Major General Marriott said: “As always with the pottery, the coasters have been beautifully and thoughtfully hand painted.”

The flower featured on all eight of the coasters is the Grass-of-Parnassus which is the county flower of Sutherland.

It can be found across much of the county where it prefers wet grasslands.

It has been designated a priority species by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

The flower was also the personal favourite of the Lord Lietuentant’s late mother.
