Proposed changes to the number of wards and councillors in Sutherland have sparked fears that it would lead to a 'stressed democratic situation'.

Under Boundary Commission proposals, now out to consultation, the number of wards in the county would be reduced from two to one and the number of councillors from six to four.

Sutherland County Committee has already made clear its displeasure at the plan as has Golspie Community Council .

And at its Zoom meeting last week, Dornoch councillors also came out against the contentious proposal.

It was claimed it would create a “stressed” democratic situation in which political parties would be the only winners and there would be no place for an independent voice.

There was concern that with one ward, all four councillors could potentially reside in the same area. The meeting agreed that would be “completely undesirable”.
