It was an invitation that was simply too good to turn down and it certainly had the desired result of providing an opportunity to socialise and to banish the winter blues.

Some 60 people from communities across East Sutherland took up Sutherland Care Forum’s offer of a free lunch, served at Rogart community hall on Saturday.

Forum chairwoman Charlotte Gibson and volunteer helpers cooked up a storm with a three-course menu and a choice of dishes ranging from lentil soup to fish pie and bread and butter putting.

The forum sourced most of the foodstuff free of charge through the Coop Food Share scheme which is aimed at preventing products going out of date from ending up in landfill. Donations were also received from Community Food Initiatives North East (CFINE).

Service manager Isobel Murray said the purpose of the event was to tackle social isolation and she had been delighted at the uptake.

At the event Marjory Mackenzie, Rogart, won a hamper while Jennifer Duncan scooped a bottle of wine and Linda Bremner a tin of shortbread.
