Sustainable tourism efforts of Highland Tourism CIC’s Yvonne Crook recognised by Social Enterprise Scotland
A vision for a sustainable tourism future has resulted in a prestigious nod for a social enterprise champion in the Highlands.
Yvonne Crook has been shortlisted as a social enterprise volunteer champion by Social Enterprise Scotland.
The nod is seen as recognition for Highland Tourism CIC’s efforts to promote a sustainable future, and Yvonne’s work with it as its co-founder.
Highland Tourism CIC said it was thrilled with the recognition, which it believes highlights Yvonne’s “exceptional efforts in developing Highland Tourism CIC and her commitment to positioning the Highlands as one of the world’s leading sustainable destinations”.
“I am incredibly proud to be listed alongside such a strong group of individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a difference,” said Yvonne, who is chairwoman of Highland Tourism CIC and Highland Renewables. “This recognition would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Highland Tourism CIC board of directors and the founding sponsorship of Tomatin Distillery, who immediately saw our vision for the Highlands.
“This is the most exciting time for the Highlands as we embrace the green revolution and work in an unprecedented partnership to achieve something great, leaving a greater legacy for future generations through our innovative approach.”
Under Yvonne’s leadership, Highland Tourism CIC has fostered a collaborative environment where local stakeholders, cross-sector businesses, and communities work together towards common goals. The CIC said this effort has laid “strong foundations” for the business and wider community to play an instrumental role in advancing sustainable practices and promoting the Highlands as a prime destination for conscious travellers.
They added that, as tourism is worth £1.5bn to the Highland economy and employs 26,000 people, it is “perfectly poised to become a global leader in sustainable tourism”.
Willie Cameron, business development director for Cobbs Group and board director of Highland Tourism CIC, added: “This is fantastic recognition of the work Yvonne has put in to drive forward a bold vision and mission for the Highlands. It has been an uphill challenge, but with the tireless efforts of Yvonne and the board of directors, we are making amazing progress.
“The new energy the sponsors of Highland Renewables have brought is taking the CIC to a new and exciting stage. Together we are building a community interest company that will lead to the region being a global leader in sustainability.”
Highland Tourism CIC also praised Tomatin Distillery’s “early and enthusiastic support” for its work, and said that this had been “crucial” in the initial stages of its initiatives.
“Their commitment to sustainability and community alignment has set a benchmark for other local businesses and significantly contributed to the project's momentum,” added a spokesperson.
They continued: “As the Highlands continue to navigate the path towards sustainable tourism, Social Enterprise Scotland's recognition of Yvonne Crook’s efforts serves as a testament to Scotland’s potential and the power of community-driven initiatives.
“Highland Tourism CIC remains dedicated to its mission, now working in a strategic partnership with Highland Renewables, and looks forward to the continued collaboration and innovation that will drive the Highlands to new heights as a model of sustainable tourism.”
