Naval students from across the globe have finished a tough week of navigation training aboard HMS Sutherland, the warship affiliated to the county.

The students – from Nigeria, Albania, Guyana, Montserrat, Belize, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa and Malaysia – joined the ship in Portsmouth.

They then spent a week around the Solent, Channel Islands and around Plymouth before returning to the ship’s home port in Devonport.

The type 23 frigate, known as The Fighting Clan, was under the captaincy of Royal Navy commander Tom Weaver.

At the end of the week students and crew members posed for a commemorative photo with the new Sutherland flag, chosen following a design competition and a public vote.
