As Burns nights go, it was definitely a celebration with a spicy twist.

East Sutherland Rotarians marked the birthday of Scotland’s greatest bard yesterday evening with a feast of Indian dishes.

Around 40 club members, family and friends sat down to a slap-up, spicy meal at award winning Brora Indian restaurant and takeaway, Sid’s Spice.

A kilted Alisdair Miller gave an address to the "haggis pakora".

Club spokesman Alistair Risk explained: “The club has met at Sid’s Spice for many years on St Andrew’s Night to enjoy a buffet supper featuring Scotland’s other national dish - a selection of curries with all the trimmings.

“We always fill every seat Sid has and have a great time.

“All was booked for November last year, but Sid got stuck in India and the restaurant was closed until two weeks before Christmas.

“But we decided that we liked our curry fix so much that we would move it to Burns night.

“It will be another year before we return to addressing the haggis!”

Meanwhile traditional Burns celebrations are being held across Sutherland this weekend.

Timespan in Helmsdale is holding a Burns supper and quiz on Saturday with live music from the Made in Helmsdale choir.

And a Burns supper is also taking place the same evening at the Scout and Guide Hall in Brora.
