The campaign group Protect the Mhoine – which opposes the development of a spaceport in the area – have started a petition.

They are urging the Scottish Government to deny Highlands and Islands Enterprise planning permission for the project, after the Highland Council granted their application last week.

The councillors' decision will be referred to the Scottish Government for review.

The petition reads: "HC has just given the go ahead to 'invade' A'Mhoine with a launchpad on a part of Flow Country – so valuable in sequestration of CO2. We demand the Scottish Gov deny planning permission, particularly as both HC and Scots Gov declared a climate emergency – or was this just lip service to environmentalists?"

The group have a target of 2000 signatures. They currently have 1156.
