Local MP Jamie Stone today hit out at the SNP's income tax hike.

A National Audit Office report confirmed Scotland’s estimated income tax revenue was around £11.7 billion in 2018/19, compared to £10.9 billion the previous year.

Scots paid almost £750 million more in income tax in 2018/19 following changes introduced by SNP ministers which meant people earning over £26,000 paid more income tax in Scotland than if they lived south of the border.

Mr Stone said: “My constituents will find this hard to stomach as they see NHS services in the Highlands continue to decline.

“I am incredibly grateful to all those who work in our health services and continue to provide excellent care despite crippling cuts and under resourcing. They are hardworking and dedicated staff who do a fantastic job.

“However, we are seeing increases in taxes but no increase in funding for public services in the Highlands, including the health and social care services, education and transport and infrastructure.

“The SNP must use this increase in income tax revenue to focus on the most rural areas of Scotland to make sure no one faces a post-code lottery when it comes to accessing local services.”
