The Met Office is warning that the Highlands could be hit by heavy snowfalls by Tuesday.

The United Kingdom's national weather agency has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for both Monday and Tuesday across a large swathe of the north of Scotland.

Areas likely to be affected, first by icy conditions and scattered snow showers on Monday, becoming heavier on Tuesday, include Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Caithness and Sutherland, and Badenoch & Strathspey.

Those areas are likely to be hit by up to 10 cm of snow by Tuesday.

Shetland, Orkney, the Western Isles, Lochaber, the north-east, and a long stretch of the east coast as far south as Humberside face similar warnings.
