A FORMER Sutherland school pupil has won an inaugural musical award.

Singer and songwriter Fifidiny Greasley, who attended Lairg Primary School and Golspie High School, scooped the Best Female Artist award at the first ever Proudly Black and Scottish Awards Gala, held in the Hilton Hotel Glasgow some weeks ago.

Proudly Black and Scottish is an association that focusses on celebrating the accomplishments of the black community in Scotland. Its first awards gala was held both to recognise achievements and to commemorate Black History Month.

Fifidiny (29), who is now based in Edinburgh, was nominated by an anonymous panel and went on to win her category via public online voting. She said she was delighted at the accolade.

After leaving school in 2010, Fifidiny studied music performance at Alness College for two years during which time she won an award for songwriting and had her demo song Broken Hearted featured on Moray Firth Radio.

A band she previously sung in won the North East Battle of the Bands and played alongside Primal Scream, Chase and Status, as well as appearing on STV in 2019, and at the Edinburgh Festival.

Fifidiny embarked on a solo music project in 2020 with Rod Jones of Scottish rock band Idlewild producing her singles I am Here and What We Had.

She recently released her debut music video which was funded by Creative Scotland, directed and filmed by Robert O’Neill and filmed at the Wee Glass House, a stunning studio apartment with breathtaking views of Dalgety Bay.

Creative Scotland granted Fifidiny around £10,000 towards her debut EP, which does not have an official release date but is expected to be released before summer 2023. Rod Jones is again producing the EP at his Post Electric Studios in Edinburgh.

Fifidiny, who is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in popular music, frequently travels north to visit her family who are now living in Dingwall and she is looking forward to spending Christmas with them.
