The achievements of a Dornoch community stalwart were recognised at a surprise retirement party held in her honour.

Joan Bishop has stepped down from her voluntary role of chairperson of Dornoch Area Community Interest Company (DACIC) after 10 years.

Colleagues, friends and members of the community gathered at Greens at the Courthouse, Dornoch last Friday evening to show their appreciation for her many years of unpaid service to the town.

Mrs Bishop has worked tirelessly for the benefit of Dornoch for decades.

She played a leading role on Dornoch Academy School Board when it became Scotland’s first self-governing school; developed the Allsorts After-School Club to support working parents with childcare; and helped establish Dornoch Festival Week among other initiatives

Luke Watson, who has taken over from Mrs Bishop at DACIC, said: “This evening we come together to celebrate Joan’s remarkable achievements and dedication to our community. Joan has left an indelible mark on the modern history of Dornoch through so many contributions.”

Mr Watson said that as director and chairperson of DACIC, Joan’s leadership had brought about projects such as the transformation of the town’s former police station into the Dornoch Hub; the development of the Dornoch South vehicle park; the establishment of Dornoch community transport scheme; and Dornoch Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA,) which is about to become operational. She had also put Dornoch on the tourism map with the Visit Dornoch brand.

Mr Watson said: “What really stands out is that Joan accomplished all of this by giving up her free time without receiving a wage. Her tireless efforts and unwavering commitment demonstrate the profound impact one individual can make.”
