A Scottish ladies’ football official has made a special trip to Brora to learn in person about the work ongoing in the village to foster the sport and encourage women to play.
Joanne Murphy, Scottish FA Girls and Women’s Club Development Officer for the north region has followed with interest the progress of Brora Rangers Ladies this year in the first season of the newly established, eight-team Women’s Football Highland League.
Brora Rangers Ladies have played their last match of the season, ending in fourth place, but members will continue to train over the winter and now have the resources in place to allow them to go through a full pre-season training routine.
Ms Murphy travelled to Brora a fortnight ago and coached a session of Brora Rangers mini-kickers a fortnight ago.
The mini-kickers has two sections, one for young children from primary one to primary five and the older section for youngsters from primary six to secondary two.
Brora Rangers Ladies coach Mary Stewart, “Jo Murphy from the SFA joined us a couple of weeks ago to take a training session with the mini-kickers.
“She had heard all about the activity going on around the youth and ladies football at Brora Rangers and wanted to come and see us in action.”
Ms Murphy took a training session with the mini-kickers, which meets on a Thursday from 5.45pm to 6.45pm at Brora Rangers astroturf and school pitches.
On average between 50 and 60 young people attend.
Mrs Stewart continued: “After the training session, Jo had a chat with the ladies team about the season just finished and the season ahead and she also dropped in on our under 13s training session. We were delighted that she took the time from her busy schedule to come and see us.”
