Secondary pupils invited to give views on climate change and dine with Sir David Attenborough

The Hunter Foundation, Sir Tom Hunter’s charity, is offering secondary pupils across Scotland with a passion for the environment, the chance to win a table for their school at a charity dinner.
The high-profile charity event will be held at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh on February 18 with renowned broadcaster Sir David Attenborough as the guest speaker.
Sir Tom said: “Climate change is happening now and we need to move quickly to address it. We are looking for answers and opportunities to what is clearly a global issue of concern, so who better to ask than the people who will be affected the most – our next generation of young Scots.”
Budding environmentalists are being asked to take part in a competition to consider what changes could be made to address the growing crisis, focussing specifically on Scotland. The best entry will secure a once-in-a-lifetime place at the event for themselves and a group of teachers and classmates.
Sir Tom challenged pupils: “The global climate emergency is one of the biggest risks to our future society. If you ruled Scotland, what big changes would you make to address the global climate crisis here in Scotland? Or how do you think young people in Scotland could lead the way in addressing climate concerns?”
Iain Gulland, chief executive of competition sponsors Zero Waste Scotland, said: “Young people all over the planet have played a vital role in raising awareness of the need to tackle the climate emergency. We saw the passion of Scotland’s school pupils during the recent climate strikes and know they can help us identify the solutions we have to find. The world needs fresh ideas for ways we can change our lifestyle and this competition represents a great opportunity for young people to share their thoughts and make a difference.”
The competition asks young people: "Think you could address the global climate emergency? Tell us how you’d do it and your secondary school could win a table for 10 at a dinner with Sir David Attenborough.
"All you have to do is submit a piece of content that summarises what your school would do if given the opportunity to address the global climate emergency. What would you change, why would you change it and how? Your content could be anything from an essay, poem or song to a video or piece of digital art.
"Written work must be a maximum of two pages and videos should be less than two minutes long and submitted as a link to YouTube. Be as creative as you like and also tell us how you’ll select the ten attendees on your table should you win (this can be in writing if submitting something creative). Feel free to promote your entry on social media using the hashtag #SirDavidDinner and tagging @THunterF.
How to enter:
The closing date for entries is Friday, February 7. To enter, you must get permission from your school. They will be responsible for getting you to and from the event if you win so you’ll need to keep them informed.
Your teacher will need to send your entry to schools@thehunterfoundation.co.uk and give the name of the school, an email address and phone number to get in touch that will be accessible during the February half term. A panel of judges will then select the winner.
When you enter you’re also giving permission to publish your work if chosen and to publicise your entry.
