Weather warnings for heavy rain have now been issued for all of the Highlands and Inner Hebrides.

An existing yellow warning, issued yesterday for heavy rain, came into force across parts of the Great Glen, Cairngorms and Moray Firth coastline at midday today (Wednesday).

And a new yellow warning covering the western half of the Highlands has now been issued for later today. The new warning comes into force at 5pm and will remain in place until tomorrow at 10am.

Commenting on the new warning for this evening, a Met Office spokesperson said: "An area of heavy rain is expected to move north-westwards across the warning area during late Wednesday afternoon and persist overnight into Thursday morning, before turning somewhat lighter and patchier.

"Through this period, 20-30 mm of rain may accumulate quite widely, but some north-facing high ground may see well in excess of 60 mm of rain.

"Strong and gusty northerly winds may exacerbate any impacts from the rain."

The area covered by the new warning extends across Caithness, northern and western Sutherland, Wester and Mid Ross, Lochaber, the southern half of the Great Glen, and the Inner Hebrides.

The existing yellow warning for rain, which includes south-eastern Caithness, eastern Sutherland, Easter Ross, the Black Isle, Inverness, Loch Ness, and Nairnshire, among others, is already in force and will remain in place until 6pm on Thursday.

Describing this warning area, a Met Office spokesperson added: "An area of heavy rain is expected to move northwest across Scotland from Wednesday afternoon, with rain most persistent across northern and eastern facing high ground.

"For many areas, rain should gradually become more showery in nature during Thursday, but at the same time, some heavy, slow-moving downpours may develop across parts of southern and eastern Scotland.

"20-40 mm may accumulate quite widely through this period, but in excess of 60 mm is quite possible over some northern and eastern facing high ground.

"Locally strong and gusty winds through Wednesday evening and early on Thursday may exacerbate any impacts from the rain."
