A second pupil at Dornoch Academy has tested positive for Covid-19.

The youngster is understood to be a close contact of the individual who tested positive earlier in the week, and was already self-isolating.

Nearly 70 pupils at the school were identified as close contacts of the first pupil on Monday and were told to self-isolate for two weeks.

Today, the senior phase S4-S6 have been sent home until track and trace can identify any further close contacts of the second pupil.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon tightened restrictions on households meeting indoors to help stem the spread of the coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for Highland Council said: "At Dornoch, we were made aware of a second positive case in a senior phase pupil, late yesterday afternoon – the pupil is already self isolating as a close contact of the first case.

"Staff and parents were informed last night and the senior phase S4-6 is closed to pupils today pending the health protection team carrying out their track and trace investigation to identify close contacts of the second case.

"A number of contacts may already be self-isolating. Further communication will be issued once this is clear."
