Schools closed and partially shut across north-west as storm winds hit region

Over 300 pupils across the Highlands have been told to stay at home today as yellow weather alerts for storm force winds continue.

A yellow warning for wind was already set to come into force at 7am today, covering most of Caithness as well as Sutherland's north and west coasts. The Met Office later brought forward the start time for the warning to 5am and extended its reach to the whole of Scotland.

A statement from North West Sutherland Schools yesterday advised that schools in Kinlochbervie and Scourie would be open from midday.
