Crew members from HMS Sutherland, the war ship affiliated to the country, ran a half-marathon on Sunday to raise money for a local cause.

The eight sailors took part in the gruelling Plymouth half-marathon – regarded as one of the more challenging races of its kind in the UK – to raise money for The Young Karers East Sutherland (TYKES) and also for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

The eight had varying levels of fitness and running abilities but all had been training hard for the last two months while the ship was docked for maintenance at its home base, Devonport, Plymouth.

And the group all crossed the finish line in under two hours, five minutes.

A spokesman said: “As a ship, we are delighted to be running and raising money for two important charities, one of which we have a close connection due to our close affiliation with the county of Sutherland.”
