Royal Dornoch Golf Club, with two teams, and Brora and Tain with one each, are entered into the 100th competition for the North’s oldest inter club trophy, the Northern Counties Cup, being played over the Moray Golf Club at Lossiemouth next week, Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th September.

First played for in 1900 by clubs stretching from Aberdeen to the Orkney Islands – and with the centenary inauguration celebrated at Royal Aberdeen in 2000 – only in the years of the Great Wars was there no competition thus making next week’s visit to Moray a significant one.

To date Royal Dornoch remain the club who have won the cup the most times (21), the foundation for their successes built up during the early years, ten in succession from 1903 to 1912, but their last win at Nairn in 1988.

Royal Dornoch, looking for their 22nd win, will have playing in their first team next week Club champion Neil Munro, plus Brian Urquhart, Kristain Sinclair, and John Shepherd. They have drawn a bye into round two where they will meet the Elgin second team.

The second team also have a first round bye and meet Nairn’s second team in their first game. Brora’s first round opponents are Muir of Ord, and Tain, also in round one, face Duff House Royal.

Hoping to make history in the 100th competition are last years’ s winners, Newmachar, who beat Nairn in the final at Dornoch. Newmachar open against Orkney.
